One of the largest regions of Italy, Tuscany is blessed with exceptional beauty and has long been one of Italy’s most loved regions. It stretches along the north-western coast of Italy, bound inland by mountains to the north and east. Much of the landscape is green and fertile - ideal for agriculture; the two most renowned crops, olives and grapes, flourish on these warm, gentle hills.
The Arno is the region’s major river, flowing down from the Apennines to provide plentiful irrigation for crops in the fields from Florence to the coast. The cities of Florence and Pisa are both built on this majestic waterway. Just off the coast lies a cluster of coastal islands, including the island of Elba (site of Napoleon’s first period of exile), where the delicious dessert wine Aleatico is produced.
