Italians love an excuse for a party. As well as an array of religious celebrations, there is a vast number of small local festivals that take place all over the country, especially during the summer. These celebrate anything and everything: the mushroom crop, pasta dishes, the local saint’s day or a political affiliation. Anyone is welcome to join in the festivities, which usually include food, wine and music, and a wonderful sense of fun. Small local celebrations such as these are often advertised at the roadside, via a hand-painted sign, and are really worth a detour.
