This famous horse race occurs twice a year in Siena, Tuscany, on the 2nd July and 16th August. Ten horseriders compete in the race, representing the various contrades, or districts, of Siena. Festivities begin 3 days prior to the horse race, however, with banquets and parades for each contrade competing.
Flags are flown in support of the different riders for each of various contrades or areas of Siena during the Palio horse race.
