A truly amazing island, Sicily is set like a jewel in the blue waters of three seas: the Tyrrhenian, Mediterranean and Ionian Seas. It is a place of breathtaking natural beauty, with rugged hills, rocky inlets, wide sandy beaches and Etna, the stupendous volcano that dominates the land. The architectural and agricultural legacy of the various nations who have ruled here, from the Phoenicians, Greeks and Romans to the Arabs and Spanish, still remain.
The warm climate and an almost total absence of frost allows Sicilian farmers to grow tender crops. Never-ending groves of citrus fruits and olives and sprawling vines bearing watermelons and grapes are visible at every turn. The best weather is usually found near the coast - inland and in the larger cities it can be unbearably hot. The southern and western coasts are, however, close to Africa and therefore susceptible to higher temperatures and the Sirocco wind.
