Although it is neither as refined nor as rich in ingredients, the cuisine of Calabria is very substantial and infused with the intense flavours of chilli peppers, mint, garlic, tomatoes, sweet bell peppers, aubergines and the famous red onions of Tropea. Durum-wheat pasta, pork and bread, as well as fish in the coastal areas, are the foods enjoyed by Calabrians. The region boasts a strong, frugal peasant tradition that combines simple ingredients to make lively, tasty foods.
