“It’s important to be able to diversify in this industry, giving yourself as many options as possible to find work in every season. Between April and October, I bring in about 150 lobster pots a day, and we’re also very lucky to have a really good scallop fishery right in Salcombe Harbour.”
I was born and bred in Salcombe, so I know it like the back of my hand. I’ve always fished, but decided to make the hobby a profession after working on a boat in Australia. I came back home to pursue the career, got all my qualifications, and now own two boats that go out regularly throughout the year. One is a charter angler for taking people out fishing, which runs mostly during the summer under the name Salcombe Angling. You’re pretty much guaranteed to catch your tea around here because the area has great tides and you get into deep water over banks, reefs and wrecks very quickly which is always a bonus, so there’s a chance of catching all sorts.
