One of the more popular series of posts on my blog is called “The Homemade Trials.” Basically, I pick a food item like macaroni and cheese or pudding and then compare a homemade version to a bunch of different store-bought varieties. I completely geek out on these and compare the varieties not only on how delicious they are, but also on how long they take to prepare, how much they cost, and how nutritious they are.

Sometimes I’m pretty surprised by the results in both directions. Foods that I think would be clearly in the “buy” category work out to be better if you make them from scratch and vice-versa. A while back I ran granola through The Homemade Trials and came out with a pretty close result.
