  • About

Always buy fruit and veg as fresh as you can. As a general rule, if a vegetable grows below ground it can be cooked by putting it into cold water and bringing it to the boil; if it grows above ground it must be put into water that is boiling first. Fruit doesn’t need to be cooked before eating, but it can be and is used in many different puddings and cakes, and even savoury dishes (such as Apple Lyonnaise).

Where to buy Greengrocers, farm shops, farmers’ markets or supermarkets. Search out your local greengrocer and see what they sell from local producers, but not everything in a local greengrocers will be fresh or local. It simply isn’t possible for many of us to shop locally on a daily basis, so supermarkets have become our one-stop shops. Many now buy much of their produce locally as they want to reduce their carbon footprint and you will find some of the freshest fruit and vegetables here as their buyers insist on buying fresh from producers, there are no middlemen and their turnover is FAST. Supermarkets must display the place of origin so try to buy locally grown and when produce is in season. This is not always possible, of course, but we can aspire to eating locally and seasonally!
