If you go out into the woods or fields mushroom hunting without success, here are four good reasons why you may have failed to find any.
One, a very hot, dry summer may not have been followed by the right amount of rain in conjunction with more warmth.

Two, if you hoped to find cèpes you did not go out looking five days after a downpour on a waning moon.

Three, you did not get up early enough. Have you ever wondered why on some mornings there are strange cars parked at the side of wooded country lanes, sometimes bearing a numberplate of a neighbouring département? They often belong to braconniers, mushroom poachers, who make quite a picking out of selling the fungi on at their local markets or elsewhere.
