Teddy Arcilla grew up in Catanduanes, an island off the eastern coast of Bicol. It is an island of mixed blessings filled with rivers, streams, and waterfalls. I flew over the island once to see an amazing sight of streams within lakes within rivers—water and land blending together to make a reluctant island. It is also located in the typhoon corridor, making it hostile territory during the months of June through October. Teddy described Holy Week (usually in April or May) to me as the best time to go to Catanduanes, when the community stages a weeklong celebration of the Crucifixion and Resurrection of Christ.
