If someone could bottle the ingredients that make up a good bar, they’d make a fortune. Sadly it’s really not that simple. A good bar has ‘vibe’ – essentially, atmosphere and the right mood – and as a bar owner or manager that’s simply something that you’ve got to create yourself; there’s no definitive answer.
Above all you create it with people – no good bar is empty, of course – but there are a few factors that I consider essential in making a bar feel welcoming and leaving your guests wanting to return. For me this starts with great staff. They’ve got to be good at what they do; passionate about what they make; and above all good communicators so that they can relay that passion to their guests.
