The secret to a great tortilla, like anything you create in the kitchen, lies in the ingredients, which are few. If you are not lucky enough to have a local vendor who mills their own fresh masa, all you need to make your own is masa harina, water, and maybe a bit of salt (and in some cases manteca, or lard), so your choice of masa harina is critical.
