My mother, Polly, was born in 1930 in British colonial Singapore, in a seaside bungalow along Pasir Panjang. In our family, we nicknamed this area ‘Long Beach’ since ‘Pasir’ and ‘Panjang’ were Malay words for sand and long respectively.
