I was born in Israel, the oldest of four siblings, and my parents moved to South Africa when I was three months old. Although I grew up in Cape Town, my immediate family maintained the same attitude towards food shared by my extended family in Israel–food has always been a big part of our lives, especially home cooking.
I can’t remember us eating out much and when we did my father was inevitably disappointed–it was terrible taking him to restaurants because we knew he was going to tell us, ‘… your mother’s [or grandmother’s] food is so much better!’
