As an island, Sardinia has many unique grape varieties, as well as a number introduced from Spain that have developed a distinctive style when grown in Sardinian terroir. Vermentino is Sardinia’s most common white wine and Cannonau the most common red, but there are many others and, like those from other lesser known regions of Italy, Sardinia’s wines are now starting to be noticed by the rest of the world. Production is dominated by large cooperatives, though most families still also make il vino dello zio (‘uncle’s wine’) for personal consumption. (for more information on Sardinian wines.)
