The 15th of August, Feast of the Assumption of the Holy Virgin, is a big celebration everywhere in the very Catholic Savoie; our children’s home participated in the festivities. In the morning there was a long mass, as long and solemn as these deeply religious people could make it, with a procession in the cemetery afterwards. Some older women wore long black and blue dresses and, instead of hats, white or black lacy fanchonettes, the little bonnets that took the place of the traditional coifs before the final invasion of city hats.
