A neglected garden is not a thriving and abundant garden. Growing food is not a hands-off activity. I encourage you to spend as much time in your garden as you can. Observe your plants and look for signs of stress or disease. Get up close and personal and search for pests. Trust me, when you take an active role in the garden, it will thank you and reward you with bountiful harvests and beautiful flowers.
For me, garden maintenance boils down to the following:
- Keep garden paths and beds weed-free and clear of debris
- Prune plants as needed for airflow and yield
- Keep your plants watered
- Feed the soil regularly to keep it healthy and happy
- Learn about potential pests in your area, work to prevent them, and manage them should they show up
- Acquire an understanding of common plant diseases and take necessary measures to prevent and mitigate them
