Aphids: Aphids are small sap-sucking insects that come in a variety of colors. You’ll find them on many crops including greens, brassicas, roses, and more. They tend to cause plant leaves to curl. If you spot curled leaves, take a proactive approach and inspect further. In large quantities, aphids can cause significant plant stress, especially if the aphids are congregating around growth points. The best course of action is to use a hose and blast them off. Another great way to control aphids is to attract lady beetles (ladybugs) to your garden; you can also purchase dormant ladybugs and release them in the garden. Ladybugs, and even more so ladybug larvae, will feast on aphids. They are a great beneficial insect to attract to your garden. You can also use an organic insecticide like neem oil or insecticidal soap if you have an infestation. If you do spot aphids on your plants, wait a day or two before trying to manage them. Their presence may attract beneficial insects.
