There is no doubt about it, more and more Irish people are turning to vegetarian or part-vegetarian food—some for moral reasons, some because a wider range of tempting vegetables is available than ever before and some for the good of their health. There is also a general unease about the presence of hormones and antibiotics in meat and the apparent failure to implement strict enough controls to restrict their use, which is unfortunate for those producers whose meat is beyond reproach, and it is very difficult for the consumer to tell which is which. Apart from that, there is a general move away from the meat-laden Irish diet of old with the growing realisation that we don’t actually need to eat huge quantities of meat to be healthy.
