If there’s a power outage, the slow cooker will turn off and not come back on even if power is restored. This is a safety feature. If you weren’t home when the power went out, you should discard the contents of the cooker—it might have cooled to an unsafe temperature. If you’re home when the power fails and the food isn’t done cooking yet, transfer it to a stovetop or grill-safe pot as soon as possible and finish cooking it over a burner (if you have a gas stove) or a grill. If the food is done cooking and the power goes out, eat it within two hours.
