For round and square cake up to 10in use 4 pillars, positioned at A or B. For larger cakes use 8 pillars, positioned at A and B. For hexagonal and heart-shaped tiers use either 3 or 6 pillars, positioned at C, D or a combination of both.
I have found the following to be the most accurate way to ensure that the design lines up perfectly on each tier. Measure the circumference of the tier accurately using ribbon and divide this circumference into 6. Adapt the given template so it fits exactly by stretching or condensing the scrolls slightly. Align the base of a long sheet of greaseproof paper against the base of the template. Using a waterproof black fibre tip pen (pencil will mark the cake), trace the first sixth of the template. Flip the greaseproof paper over and line up to draw the next sixth. This will provide one symmetrical copy of the design. Repeat until the design has been drawn a total of 6 times to provide 3 full symmetrical copies of the design.
