My mother was the youngest of a large brood of 12, with nine surviving to adulthood. Coming from such a big family meant that she didn’t have to take on too many domestic chores as there were many hands on deck.

My grandmother was giving birth to my mother while her eldest kids were having their first children. By the time she was about 10 years old, my mother’s elder brother was married and, of course, the new daughter-in-law was helping with the domestic chores. So, instead of participating in the chores, my mother was responsible for looking after the animals.
