Ukraine is bordered by Russia in the east and northeast; Belarus in the north; Poland, Slovakia, and Hungary in the west; and Romania and Moldova in the southwest. With a population of over 45 million, Ukraine is the largest European country in the region after Russia. Kyiv, the capital, is located on the Dnipro River in north-central Ukraine. The country is divided into twenty-four oblasts or regions with the autonomous republic of Crimea with the cities of Kyiv and Sevastopol having the same rights as the oblasts.
