This is the checklist that I generally try to follow. Obviously, how often you need (or want) to clean your own kitchen will be different and will depend on many different factors. But this works pretty well for me as someone who cooks every day and has a young child and all the mess that comes along with that. I definitely recommend getting a good podcast or some music on while doing this!
DAILY
- Put away any food – from shopping, meals, leftovers etc.
- Dispose of any food waste and packaging responsibly into the compost, council food waste, recycling or dustbin.
- Load / unload the dishwasher (if you have one).
- Wipe down all surfaces, including the table and hob.
- Wash up and put everything away. Did you know there is an order to washing up that helps make it as efficient and effective as possible? Fill the sink or a washing up bowl with plenty of hot soapy water (this saves water, compared to doing it under a running tap), then wash everything in the following order, rinsing under hot water once cleaned to remove all traces of washing up liquid. Doing it in this order means that greasy pans don’t leave stubborn streaks on glasses:
- Glasses
- Cups
- Cutlery
- Plates
- Kitchen equipment
- Pots and pans
- Quickly clear out and rinse the sink.
- Sweep or vacuum the floor, if necessary
- Tidy away stray items that have ended up in the kitchen or on the table – everything from handbags and post, to toys and telephones.
