Major Patrick Rance (b 1918) is a one-man campaign to save British cheese. As the author of The Great British Cheese Book (1982), Major Rance is the world’s foremost authority on his subject. Jean-François Revel (b 1924) is a French political philosopher and journalist, former director of L Express and columnist for Le Point. Of course Foodies admire his Without Marx or Jesus (1971) and The Totalitarian Temptation (1976), but they reserve their highest praise for Culture and Cuisine (1982) – originally published in 1979 as Un Festin en Paroles - subtitled ‘a journey through the history’ of food.’
