  • About

Strathalbyn Cookery Book No. 2, 1925 (State Library of WA).

De Grey station was once considered Western Australia’s premier pastoral enterprise. Covering about 12,000 square kilometres of the Pilbara, the massive holding ran about 70,000 sheep, 5000 cattle and several hundred horses when Myra Edgar moved there in 1890.

But despite its impressive scale, its fine livestock and its considerable earning capacity, Myra hated it. She hated its isolated location, almost 1800 kilometres from her family. She hated the dust storms that swept in from the east, covering everything with grime. She hated the primitive building that was her first married home, with its unlined iron ceiling and glassless windows. And she hated the extreme heat that stole the life of her baby son.
