Henry Nissen was a champion boxer, but it was his skills in another arena that generated headlines 50 years ago for Melbourne’s oldest Jewish school.
In 1968, the boxing legend agreed to help Bialik College promote a ground breaking collection of Jewish recipes, by taking part in a latke-eating competition. In two and a half minutes, he chomped his way through two dozen of the traditional potato pancakes, made using about one and a half kilograms of potatoes, and was proclaimed Australia’s Latke Eating Champion.
