When I was a child I could never understand why Adam and Eve wasted their time picking an apple, when clearly from the fact that they wore fig leaves they must have had access to figs. I first tasted figs as a small child in Bordagira, where we were staying on a friend’s property. I thought that the delicate pink and white flesh of the fig was one of the most delicious things I had ever eaten. I have other favorites now, but still love figs. That moment when the taste of the fig explodes in your mouth is quite exquisite. And the fig is one of the most sensual-looking of fruits - there is something about it that has a hint of wickedness, which fits again with my query about the Garden of Eden: Why lose your virtue for an apple?
