To put together a pantry that will serve you well, there are things to understand about cooking so that you stock your shelves to best fit your style (and budget) for preparing food to nourish yourself and your loved ones.
My rule of thumb is that the food should taste like itself, but enhanced, sort of like its best self, not like salt, pepper, hot spice, or herbs and spices, or whatever else you might add to your recipe. Any enhancements should function as ways to bring out the natural flavors of foods; you don’t want a hostile takeover of your dish.
