This was the first “Wait, What?” moment of my American life, and it was a sign that things weren’t going to be what I expected.

When I was seven, my parents sat me down and explained that we were going to move to America. At first, I wasn’t thrilled. I had just started developing my first crush (on a cute girl named Natasha—or the Chinese version of that name) and making a friend circle (thanks to my extensive collection of more than a hundred dinosaur toys). I was even kind of popular. I didn’t want to leave that all behind.
