In the old days, the Bell Tower in the heart of the old city marked the rise of dawn, when a large bell would be struck to welcome a new day. The Drum Tower, facing the Bell Tower, held a drum that was struck during sunset. While these daily traditions are no more, the two towers are still prominent landmarks in Xi’an, referenced by locals to specify location or directions in the city. Visitors can climb to the top of the towers for panoramic views; my favorite is from the top of the Bell Tower.
