Date and Walnut Cake

Cooking time—1¼–1½ hr.


  • ¾ lb. plain flour
  • ¼ teasp. salt
  • oz. butter or margarine
  • 5 oz. sugar
  • a little grated nutmeg
  • level teasp. bicarbonate of soda
  • 2 level teasp. cream of tartar
  • 4 oz. chopped dates
  • oz. chopped walnuts
  • 2 eggs
  • 1½–2 gill milk (approx.)


Sift flour and salt and rub in the fat. Add the other dry ingredients and mix with the eggs and milk to a dropping consistency. Put into a greased 8-in. tin and bake in a fairly hot oven (375° F., Gas 5). Reduce heat to moderate (350° F., Gas 4) after 15 min.
