Turnovers were a winter breakfast treat made with the extra pie dough my mother saved from her apple pies.
In a bowl, soak the cherries, cider and ⅓ cup boiling water for 1 hour or until they plump up.
In a medium saucepan, combine the cherries and juice, walnuts, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and orange zest. Cook over medium heat for 5 minutes, or until the cherries have absorbed most of the liquid, stirring often to prevent scorching on the bottom of the pan. Set aside and reserve.
