Put in a basin half a pound of butter, work it well, add half a pound of sugar and four eggs, beat all well together, then add half a pint of milk, two pounds of flour, a quarter of a pound of caraway-seeds or half a pound of plums; put it in a hoop or deep pie-dish, and bake two hours.

To ascertain if the cake is done, take a piece of dry wood or skewer, pass it into the cake, and if it comes out dry, it is done.
