Brisbane nurse Faye Solomon was very nervous the first time she took on the big guns of Queensland show cooking at the Ekka, but after surviving breast cancer years before, she had promised herself to never avoid a challenge. Encouraged by her family and a doctor at the clinic where she works, she entered a cornflour sponge.

‘I used to make sponges and take them into work, and she would say to me, “Faye, you should be in the Ekka” so I was just following doctor’s orders,’ Faye jokes
