Anne Long learnt to make confectionery at her mother’s elbow. As children growing up in Gympie in the 1950s, she and her three sisters were called in to help prepare items for sale at the local Anglican church flower show. ‘They would give Mum a 25-kilogram bag of sugar to make sweets for the sweet stall, so we were all called in to stir pots on the wood stove,’ says Anne.

While they worked hard for the flower show, the town’s a
