I wish I could say this was our idea, but it is based on a recipe on an American baking blog that I loved the sound of. It was incredibly buttery even by our standards, so we set about making a version of our own that was closer to shortbread and filled with home-made caramel and flakes of sea salt. I had some left over chocolate Nutella spread and a jar of caramel to use up. I used mostly Nutella and added a little caramel. This recipe worked well and seemed popular with my children. A suggestion is maybe to keep the portions small as the bar is quite filling.

You are right about the portions – I divided it into 12 pieces, and enjoyed it so much I ate 2 slices in one sitting. I basically didn't eat for the next 24 hours :-) 18 slices might suit a more normal appetite

Made this for our running club's 5000m festival and it was a bestseller. Maybe not the healthiest treat, but crunchy, sweet, salty and delicious. It’s very similar to the topping of a perfectly cooked crumble, with extra chewy caramel. Careful with your teeth though!
