Jam tarts always remind me of birthday parties. The tables in the tea room were rearranged down the centre and groaned under the weight of treats: jam tarts, lemon tarts, chocolate cornflake cakes, animal biscuits, fairy cakes, little sandwiches, mini sausage rolls, cheese on sticks, jelly, ice cream and chocolate blancmange. We held parties on a Sunday or Monday afternoon, but customers often tried to sneak in. Some even gate-crashed and sat down for tea.
