My first paid job was as a washer up at the age of eleven. I was paid fifty pence an hour, which I spent on Jackie magazine and saved up for flares. I watched Dad make chocolate cream slices on a Saturday morning. The highlight was the bowl of leftover baked pastry smeared with chocolate, jam and whipped cream that was shared among the Saturday staff. The piping bags and mustard pots were a devil to clean, but those chocolate cream slices kept everyone happy.
