Treacle tart with cream was part of my childhood, like a loyal friend. One customer, a doctor, occasionally bought four treacle tarts to share with staff at the local hospital, St Peter’s, in Chertsey. When Dad had to go to the hospital, the same doctor greeted him and looked after him. Mum often gave cakes and flapjacks to the doctors and nurses while Dad was admitted.
