It is said that you can trace old Roman roads in Britain by the wild cherry trees that grew up from stones spat out by legions as they marched! Here is a very simple cake decorated with cherry sweets as a tribute to them.

Place the cake flat base up on a clean board or work surface. Brush the jam all over it. Lightly dust a clean, flat surface with icing sugar (dust your rolling pin too) and roll out the sugarpaste into a rectangle no thinner than 5mm and slightly larger than the cake and sides.
