I love to make French toast with challah or a brioche loaf, but any homemade bread will be delicious. For best results, cut the bread into generous ¾-inch (2 cm) slices about an hour before using. This allows you to soak the bread longer without the pieces falling apart, giving a fuller flavor and texture to the French toast.

Whisk all ingredients together and let stand for 5 minutes to let the flavorings infuse. Pour the mixture into a deep-dish plate with enough room to soak the bread, preferably 2 or 3 slices at a time. Lay each side in the mixture, allowing the liquid to soak halfway into the bread.
