In a 4-quart (3.8 L) saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the onions, basil stems, and garlic. Season with salt and cook gently for 5 minutes. Add the tomatoes and stir well. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer.
Cook for 45 minutes, stirring every 5 minutes.
Remove the basil stems and, using an immersion blender, puree the sauce in the pan.
