Fresh figs are available for most of the year and are at their best in summer and early autumn. In fact the fig is a bizarre specimen botanically, as it is the seeds that are the fruits, with around 1500 of these individual fruits clustering together to make a single fig. While this is a good fact for the next game of trivial pursuits, it is of little consequence in the kitchen, where cultivated figs have featured for around 5000 years and were particularly popular in Ancient Rome in dried
