I had quite a sheltered upbringing and wasn’t allowed to go to pubs or bars. Even through university years I didn’t really drink alcohol much so it wasn’t until I got to Tokyo that I had my first margarita. I lived in Shiinamachi, which had one of the best little Mexican bars near the train station. It was very ramshackle and the owner loved to practise his English. My Tone would sometimes meet me there after work and we’d have Corona beers and margaritas before heading home. After 25 years
