Bagels are fun to make if you fancy a bit of ‘different’ bread making. The key to chewy bagels lies in the poaching so don’t be tempted to miss this step out – and don’t be daunted, you’ll soon be poaching and baking bagels like a pro.

  • 450 g (1 lb) strong white bread flour

Method

  1. To make the dough measure the dry ingredients into a large mixing bowl. Make a well in the centre and pour in the water and oil. Combine the ingredients together to form a rough dough.

  2. Tip the dough out onto the work surface and knead for 10 minutes. Transfer the dough to an oiled bowl, cover and allow it to rise for 1 hour or until doubled in s
