Autumn fruits in mulled wine

This very simple dessert makes good use of blackberries that are a little tart to eat on their own. Try using other fruits instead of pears and plums, such as apples and greengages.

Ingredients

  • 200 ml (7 fl oz) full-bodied fruity red wine (like a New World Merlot)
  • 1 small cinnamon stick

Method

  1. Put the red wine into a pan with the cinnamon, cloves, bay leaf, sugar and orange peel. Bring to the boil and simmer gently for 5 minutes. Remove from the heat and leave to cool.
  2. Meanwhile, quarter and stone the plums. Peel, halve and core the pears, then cut each half into 6 wedges. Put all the fruits into a bowl and pour the mulled wine over them. Cover and l
