The village of Stilton in Huntingdonshire gave its name to this most famous of English cheeses. It was not originally made there, but the recipe was acquired in the late eighteenth century by the landlord of the Bell Inn in Stilton, which was a stage on the main road from London to the North and Scotland. He sold it to the stagecoach passengers when they got out, and the cheese proved so popular that it became famous as ‘Stilton’ over the whole country.
