A Scottish speciality that is often known as cream crowdie. Crowdie was originally a gruel made from oatmeal and water, then the name was applied to fresh cheese (sold as such today). The name then became associated with an oatmeal cream, and raspberries were added. Cranachan was traditionally served at festive times, particularly Hallowe’en, when it contained charms – a ring for marriage, a coin for wealth, a horseshoe for good luck, and so on.
