The Ancient Greeks were convinced the fig was such a healthy fruit that it became a major part of the athletes’ diet in the original Olympic games.
In Britain, because of our suspicion of raw fruits, figs would always have been eaten cooked, and were most likely valued more as medicine, once thought to cure warts, leprosy, the falling sickness (epilepsy) – and constipation.
